According to jailbreak developer MuscleNerd it involves a workaround, which can only be used for a single SIM. However, it is possible to create multiple unlock tickets for multiple SIM-cards, which will be usable for a longer period of time even if Apple decides to take action. While the iPhone 4 was still sold a large number of times with a SIM-lock; Apple’s latest iPhone 4S is available factory unlocked in almost every country where it is sold.

This latest unlock method was discovered by the relatively unknown iPhone-hacker Loktar_Sun, who doesn’t seem to have any ties with the iPhone Dev Team. Because Loktar_Sun is located in China he has to work its way around the Chinese censorship, which makes it difficult to signup for social networks such as Twitter. MuscleNerd has now confirmed that his method does work; he had successfully unlocked his iPhone 4S and is now making use of the T-Mobile network.

It was previously already possible to unlock your iPhone 4S with the GEVEY SIM ($55) and CutYourSIM ($185) solution, but both solutions costs money. This new method that is making use of Sam Bigner’s SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) Package to create a valid unlock-ticket is available for free. The unlock tutorial can be found here.

However, the solution of Loktar_Sun requires that your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S is jailbroken and that it is recognized in iTunes. The SAM Package-unlock tweak does have some limitations: you can only use the method with the SIM that is currently placed in your iPhone. It is therefore not possible to swap SIM cards, although it is possible to create a valid unlock ticket for other SIM-cards as well. For people that still have to deal with an locked iPhone it may be better to contact your mobile operator to remove the lock officially.
