Nobody had expected anything today from Apple, but they have just released the first developer preview of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. This is already the ninth major release of Mac OS X or OS X as Apple now seems to keep referring to it, the company says that it will be a paid update that should be available in the summer of this year will be distributed via the Mac App Store. More than 100 new features have been added to the new operating system of Apple, one of the biggest new features is the application Messages, which allows you to chat with other users that are either using a Mac or an iOS device with iMessage.
The iChat application is completely removed in the developer preview of Mountain Lion and is replaces with the new Messages application. With Messages it is possible to sent unlimited messages, high quality photos and videos to each other; from a Mac to another Mac or an iOS 5 device. Other platforms like AIM, Jabber, Yahoo! Messenger, and Google Talk are still supported. Users can today download the first beta version of Messages for Lion as well. The final version will also be available for Mountain Lion.
The replacement of the outdate iChat application is good news, and the new Messaging service sounds great especially the fact that you can communicate with other iOS devices. The beta version for Lion can be downloaded here (save file as); the Apple servers are currently having a hard time so keep trying!
