Apple, the creator and manufacturer of the iPad have lost a very costly legal case in China. The company from Cupertino is no longer allowed to use the name of popular tablet in the country, unless it pays a hefty compensation.

The brand name iPad is currently owned by Proview Technologies. This Chinese company has two subsidiaries: Proview Taipei and Proview Shenzhen. The company Proview Taipei has registered the trademark iPad in various Asian countries, while the branch in Shenzhen owns the name in China. Apple did sign a license agreement with Proview Taipei but did not sign an agreement with Proview Shenzhen, they however are selling the iPad in China.

Apple though that it had everything arranged with Proview Taipei, but Proview Shenzhen claimed that they still had the rights of the name in China. The Chinese judge ruled in favor of Proview, which could cause some serious troubles for Apple. The company can either decide to change the name of the tablet in China or pay $1.6 billion to Proview. It is not yet known what Apple will decide to do.
