whatsapp ipod touch 150x150 How to install WhatsApp on your iPod Touch and iPadWhatsApp is one of the most popular applications on iOS, it allows you to chat with people who also have WhatsApp installed, it works quite similar like text messaging although WhatsApp is free. WhatsApp is currently available for iOS, Android, Symbian and BlackBerry OS.

The application cannot be installed on an iPod Touch, because it has been given the tag that it is only compatible with the iPhone. Using the iPhone Configuration Utility it is still possible to install WhatsApp on an unsupported iDevice, a jailbreak is not needed.

If you want to install WhatsApp on your iPod Touch, you will have to follow the following steps. The results to install this app on the iPad are mixed, the latest WhatsApp version (2.6.2) seems to have a hardware check which doesn’t allow the iPad to start the application. There are however some iPad users that said that they have it working.

  1. Buy WhatsApp using iTunes on your Mac/PC
  2. Download the iPhone Configuration Utility 3.3
  3. Install the iPhone Configuration Utility 3.3
  4. In the left column, click ‘Applications’ choose ‘Add’, browse to the iTunes Music folder Music ▸ iTunes Media ▸ Mobile Applications and select the package ‘WhatsApp.ipa’.
  5. Now connect your iPod Touch to your Mac and select it under ‘Devices’. Click on the ‘Applications’ tab, select WhatsApp button and click on Install. WhatsApp will now be installed on your iPod Touch!
Update
One of our readers (thanks. Mark)  also found another way to install WhatsApp on your iPod Touch and iPad, you will however need a jailbroken device.
  1. Before starting WhatsApp, go to Cydia.
  2. Add BigBoss repository if it isn’t there. (http://apt.thebigboss.org/repofiles/cydia/)
  3. Search for WhatsPad and install the application.
  4. Now install WhatsApp on your device, purchase it through iTunes.
  5. WhatsApp should start connecting and send you the three digit code.
  6. Enter it on the application and you should be up and running.

this method has worked for me without jailbreaking. I have updated to the latest versions of everything and works.

however, there is one problem. Whatsapp is on the ipod, but as it gets installed onto the ipod from outside itunes, itunes doesnt like it when i try to sync the ipod. itunes keeps asking me to repeatedly authorize the computer for the whatsapp app, when i do, it says it is already authorized but keeps asking me the same thing, and therefore have to cancel the sync. anyone know a solution!?

Ok, i found out that old versions of WhatsApp work perfectly fine with method. If you have a jailbroken iOS device, you will have to use Installous to get an old version. I can’t say more for obvious reasons, you will have to find it yourself. After getting the old version, just follow the steps here. The iPad 2 can’t be jailbroken, so you will have to wait anyway.

This message relates to 2g ipod touch, using whatsapp 2.6.4. I had to jailbreak it first using redsn0w. Then I tried to follow the steps above using iphone configuration utility using my PC, but like Angie above I couldn’t find the package “WhatsApp” under mobile applications. Then I used my mac and I was able to find it. I worked! Now i have my Whatsapp back running with all features.

well,,,, guys i just installed this shit on my iPod since they decied to stop supporting it,,, i can teach u my method .. :) it was created by me very suddenly…. well u need to search any older jailbraked version that cannot be synced correctly ,, any Whatsapp 2.4 ,, u will find alot on google.. the idea is to rename it and sync as WhatsApp 2.6.4 and put it in ur Application directry which is Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications and SYNC then u will get %70 and an Error,, then go Again to ur Applications directory \iTunes\Mobile Applications ,,, and replace it with ur Original WhatsApp 2.6.4 , [u should buy one by iTunes and keep it away on desktop then re put it..] ,,, and just resync it will be complete.

    Jul 25, 2011

    Hello

Thanks to the comment of Xcuter, I managed to install WhatsApp on my iPod touch 4G (not fully tested yet, but the App is running):

The target is, that iTunes thinks it installs Version 2.4 but infact installs Version 2.6.4.
Version 2.4 could be installed on iPod touch, Version 2.6.4 will not be installed by iTunes.

    How to do in detail:

    1. You need both WhatsApp Versions, 2.4 and 2.6.4 (or just the latest). Download the latest Version from the AppStore. Version 2.4 you’ll find with Google (f.e. google: “WhatsApp v2.4 iPhone iPod Touch Lz0PDA rar”).

    2. Navigate to the folder, where iTunes stores the Apps:
For Mac user: /Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Application
For Windows user: C:\Users\USER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications
Copy the file “WhatsApp 2.6.4.ipa” to a save location (f.e. Desktop)! You’ll need it later.
Rename the ipa-file of the WhatsApp-Version 2.4. to “WhatsApp 2.6.4.ipa” and copy it to the Mobile Applicatins Folder.

    3. Open iTunes and go to the “Apps” section in your Media Library. Delete the WhatsApp Version there from the Library (choose to keep the file!). Drag&Drop the modified file from the Mobile Applications folder to the Library.

    4. Connect your iPod Touch to the Computer, select it in iTunes and switch to the “Apps”-Tab. Enable App Synchronization, if not already done. Drag&Drop the WhatsApp Icon from the list on the left to the Home Screen on the right.

    5. Click “Apply” on the bottom right corner. The installation will start. At ca. 70% an error will occur and the installation will stop.

    6. Now go back to the Mobile Applications folder and replace the “fake” WhatsApp 2.6.4.ipa with the “real” file you copied to a save location before. Don’t change anything in iTunes. iTunes now will think, it installs Version 2.4. but infact will install the file with Version 2.6.4.

    7. In iTunes, Drag&Drop the WhatsApp Icon again from left to right an click “Apply”.

    8. The Installation should finish now without error.

    9. Start the App on the iPod as long as it is connected to the Computer.

    10. If the App on the iPod crashes, uninstall it in iTunes. Disconnect the iPod, restart iTunes and reinstall the App.

    Good Luck!

    Tested with the following specs:
    iPod Touch 4G
    iOs 4.3.1
    Windows XP SP3
    iTunes 10.4.0.80
    Whatsapp-Versions 2.4 und 2.6.4

      Jul 25, 2011

… and I just found out the Problem of this Solution:
The next time when synchronizing the Apps, there will be a message saying, that the Computer has to be activated. This message will be repeated until you choose not to activate. But this causes iTunes to uninstall WhatsApp. Fortunately, the installation process as described above will work again and the settings and chats won’t get lost (except the phone number has to be reentered), but the whole thing is quite annoying…

    • William Dutton
      Sep 25, 2011

I think the latest update broke the validation service for the ipod and such for numbers.

The unable to connect to whatsapp service only happens on the latest version – older versions work still though unfortunately whatsapp has patched these causing the validation text to say “Your whatsapp version is old please upgrade” instead of giving a pin number. (If you have already validated a number then it WILL work however – once logged in you can upgrade to the latest version)

This is causing me to be unable to validate my new number leaving me stuck using my old one. :( I will update if I find a work around. :)

        Sep 25, 2011

I did not find a fix sorry. :(

        • William Dutton
          Sep 25, 2011

Ok – it is possible somehow. Get an old version – 2.6.4 from say installous. Now send for validation – it will fail giving the message that it is old. Go back and change number but enter the same number. Now send again for validation – if what happened to me happened to you I got no text at all. Then I updated to the latest version and launched it and I was logged in with my new number I wanted to validate somehow! Not sure what happened there but I somehow bypassed the validation process. You might have to have a play but I am thankful I have somehow changed to my new number – I don’t know if what I said earlier will reproduce the glitch as I was trying to do a few things. Feedback here if you manage to get it working with what I said or some other trick so others can get theirs working. :)

Get the other person to send you a message to get round the favourites issue in 2.6.4.

Not sure of why the server error for other person when you are on 2.6.6 it sounds like a coincidence as their connection has nothing to do with your whatsapp version surely!?

  28. WAVERACE
    Oct 03, 2011

Ive had Whatsapp on my touch for a year+ now with no problems…
I also got the app on my iphone 3G I don’t receive notifications on it when I’m out of the app and the touch is generally more faster, so I prefer communicating on that.

I made a big mistake yesterday I wanted to update my old number… Well that turned to be a huge mistake.

Whatsapp has discontinued the application on the itouch their reason for it they only want it to be on a phone platform.
If you are jailbroken though you can still get it from installous.

So I got into the process of updating the number… It tells me to enter your country code and new number I do just that and I get this message:

“Could not connect to Whatsapp service. Please try again later.”

WI-Fi is working, double checked on my iphone and Whatsapp is connected.
But I can’t move past this prompt

I deleted Whatsapp messenger and downloaded an earlier version and I get the same prompt with exception to V2.6.4… I can move past the confirmation screen.

After the confirmation screen, Whatsapp should send you a text with a 3 digit code but I get a text telling me:

“Your Whatsapp version is old please upgrade”

I’m still receiving text (notifications on the touch when I’m not in the app) on my previous number but when I enter the app I get the prompt, enter my new phone number…

    :(

for those of you that have got ipod touch and whatsapp messenger doesn´t work, try downloading version 2.4.4 of whatsapp messenger from the installous.
i had the latest version and it didn´t let me in, it said something like “UNABLE TO CONECT WITH WHATSAPP MESSENGER, PLEASE TRY LATER.” so I downloaded version 2.4.4 and now it works perfectly.

        Hello,
I have the same problem as Rachel. I installed the app on my ipod touch using the first method (without jailbreaking), and all went fine until I tried to add my phone number. Then it just says ‘Could not connect to WhatsApp service. Please try again later.’
        Thanks for your help!

I installed from bigboss through Cydia the application calle WHATSPAD on my iphone touch 3g running 4.2.1. When finished, I went to WhatsApp 2.6.9 icon, plugged in my phone number which is my Nokia cell phone actually, then I received a text message from WhatApp server on my Nokia with a 3 digit code to plug in WhatsApp. I typed the 3 digit code in Whatsapp, now it works, I can receive and send text messages.
Note without whatsAPP I was not able to connect to Whatapp server with 2.6.9, 2.6.7. I also was not able to make it work on 2.6.4 without WhatsApp

    Hi everyone :)
Ok I’m really annoyed now… Cos I like downloaded the latest version of WhatsApp Messenger on my iPod touch 4G and I used the iPhone Configuration Utility method and it installed it on my iPod without any problems!
But there’s a problem when I actually try to get it to work… So here goes…
When I open the app everything is fine and it comes up with a message saying something like “to use whatsapp on the iPod touch you will need to do the following: 1) you will need a functioning phone number 2) you will need to have your contacts updated with their phone numbers to contact hem using whtsapp”
So that’s fine and then I click next and it asks me for my phone number and the country number code thing… That’s still fine but then… When I click done a message comes up and says “whatsapp service is currently unavailable, please try again later”
    WHAT DO I DOOO??????
Please help and don’t say something obvious and stupid like “turn your wifi on ” because it is on all the time :)
THANKYOU so much if you find a solution!! :)

Unfortunately attempted to action this today on iPad running 5.0.1 and once installed as described in article I get the error Sorry your device is currently not supported. I attempted to get to the settings menu when it first opened by to no avail. If anyone has been successful on 5.0.1 non jailbroken, I’d be interested to hear how.

    Cheers

I discovered an another way to do it. If you have jailbreak, just download Whatsapp from Installous, for free, and then install WhatsPad from Cydia. Worked for me.

    iPod Touch 4g, iOS: 4.3.3 Redsn0w Jailbreak..

    have a nice day! :)
